Health Insurance Information

All full-time students at the University of Connecticut are required to maintain health insurance coverage in order to register for Fall 2008 classes. (A full-time student is any undergraduate student enrolled for twelve or more credits.) Students may choose to be covered for accidents and illnesses through:

  1. a personal insurance policy
  2. a plan carried by their parents
  3. a group policy sponsored by the University, which is sold and administered through a private insurance agency under contract to the University. To review the University-sponsored health insurance policy and coverage, click here. (Some general information is presented at the bottom of this page).

The University uses what is called a "hard waiver" system to assure student health coverage. This means students will be AUTOMATICALLY enrolled in and billed for the University-sponsored plan. If you want coverage under the University-sponsored plan, do nothing; you are automatically enrolled.

If you are currently covered by a health insurance provider and you wish to decline the University plan, you must provide proof of health insurance and file an on-line insurance waiver in order to have this fee removed from your fee bill. This waiver can be done through the PeopleSoft Financials system:

  1. Log into your PeopleSoft account
  2. Then navigate to SA Self Service
  3. Then Learner Services
  4. Then Finances
  5. Then UC Health Insurance Waiver

If you fail to complete the waiver in PeopleSoft, it will be assumed that you accept coverage offered under the University sponsored health insurance plan, and the charge for that coverage will remain on your fee bill.

The health insurance waiver webpage is now available for student access for Fall 2008. If you chose to select the University sponsored health insurance plan waiver, you will receive a confirmation number through the health insurance waiver webpage. A waiver can be set up before your fee bill is created. This will prevent the health insurance charge from appearing on your bill. If you select the waiver after your fee bill is created, the charge will not be removed until after the University completes the Actual Tuition Calculation, on or about July 10th, after the paper bills are mailed to students' homes.

The last day to waive the University sponsored health insurance plan is September 15, 2008. For more complete information about the University's health insurance policy, click here.

The university has contracted with The Chickering Group, an Aetna company, to provide accident and sickness insurance coverage to eligible students. The cost of the coverage is $870.00 for the 2008-09 plan year.

The coverage effective dates will remain the same (August 15 -- August 14) for each academic year. The coverage is still "accident" or "illness" coverage and will retain all prior covered benefits. There are some added benefits to the plan which include:

  • Maximum pharmacy benefits (per plan year) have been raised to $1,000.00 (up from $750.00 in prior years).
  • The pharmacy co-pays have been reduced to $20.00 for brand name prescription medication and $10.00 for generic.
  • The Gardasil HPV vaccine has been added as a covered benefit. The vaccination will be covered at 80% of the reasonable and customary charge after a $15.00 copay.

The Registrar at theTorrington Campus has a supply of plan brochures outlining the program. To review the University-sponsored health insurance policy and coverage, click here. Specific questions regarding coverage, benefits or enrollment can be directed to the Insurance Coordinator, Tresca Smith at (860) 486-4535 or by email at tresca.smith@uconn.edu. Ms. Smith can also answer questions on how students will be impacted, if they were previously insured through Consolidated.
