Placement Information

Completing the Placement Process

The University of Connecticut does not have placement exams for entering students. All placements in ENGLISH and MATH are done by SAT scores and/or high school rank.

ENGLISH PLACEMENT
The English Placement is not a test. Your placement options in English will be based on your Verbal SAT score.
Click here for more information about First-Year English Placement.

PLACEMENT IN QUANTITATIVE (Q) COURSES
All entering students will be evaluated for quantitative proficiency based on their Math SAT score and/or class rank. Using this information, advisors will provide information to students in regard to their likelihood of being successful in quantitative courses.

Students may be encouraged to complete MATH 104Q: Introductory College Algebra and Math Modeling prior to enrolling in any other Q-courses. Advisors may recommend appropriate support services; e.g., quantitative-skills tutorials, workshops, supplemental instruction, etc., for students whom they feel will benefit from such services. In some cases, advisors may recommend postponing registration in a Q course until after the student has completed a semester of course work at the University. Students should discuss with their advisor how best to satisfy the Q course requirement based on their background, prior course preparation and career aspirations.
Click here for more information about Quantitative (Q) Course Placement.

PLACEMENT IN FIRST-YEAR MATHEMATICS CALCULUS
Depending on the student's preparation and course of study, some schools and colleges require entering students to take a Mathematics Calculus Readiness Survey in order to determine which Mathematics course is most appropriate for their first term.*
To access the Calculus Readiness survey, click here.

*You should complete the Mathematics Calculus Readiness Survey only if you are interested in any of the following schools/colleges or majors: Agriculture and Natural Resources; Allied Health; Education (Math Education and Science Education); Engineering; Liberal Arts and Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics); Pharmacy.
